Mr. Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s Federal Minister of Health, visited the Digital Health Cluster of the Hasso Plattner Institute on June 8, 2023. The focus of Prof. Lauterbach’s visit was an exchange about current research initiatives in the field of digital health and artificial intelligence (AI). One of the key interests of his visit was the exchange about how to enable transatlantic data exchange in a secure and privacy-preserving way. The NephroCAGE project with its federated learning infrastructure is a lighthouse project with more than two years of experiences in making use of a transatlantic data exchange our real-world scenario from nephrology. Thus, the minister was very interested in learning from consortium leader Mr. Dr. Matthieu-P. Schapranow about technical possibilities of federated learning as well as best practices on supporting multi-national projects. Furthermore, he was interested to learn how historic transplant data serves as the foundation for development of high-quality clinical prediction models. The individual assessment of post-transplant risks in combination with an advanced epitope matching of organ donor and recipient helps to prevent post-transplant risks and has an important impact on the quality of healthcare. Karl Lauterbach was very impressed to learn about NephroCAGE and about further projects demonstrating  potentials of AI in healthcare. He underlined the need for more advanced research on artificial intelligence in healthcare and the translation into clinical routine in Germany.
